Maurice Ungaro owns this and he is great. I have known Maurice since 1997, when I had a temp job in Beaufort County's planning department. At that time Maurice was the county's historic preservation planner. He taught me how to find information about land on these ancient yellow parcel maps (this was when GIS was still in its infancy and the computers in the planning department were mostly used for word processing and email). Then Maurice moved away. Fast forward ten years, and he's back -- with his wife, Carlotta Ungaro, the new president of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce. Maurice has three major assets, in addition to Carlotta: 1) he has a historic preservation degree and deep knowledge of architecture and design; 2) he is a skilled woodworker (and also a good dancer); and 3) he is chairperson of the South Carolina Battleground Trust. As for the maps in the planning department, they are a thing of the past now we have fast, fabulous on-demand GIS* courtesy of Dan Morgan and the other geographic information systems gurus at Beaufort County.
*Service will not work on a Mac. This is only reason the Beaufort County GIS site gets only a 99 out of 100 on the fabulousness scale.
Bike rental
City Loft Hotel rents bikes. They are located in downtown Beaufort. They have Jamis Taxi cruisers, $8 for 4 hours, $12 for 8 hours. Check with the people at the hotel office.
Lowcountry Bicycles rents bikes. They are located on Lady's Island. They have Electra cruisers, $15 for half a day, $30 for 24 hours. They have an online reservation form. They also rent bike racks and trail-a-bikes.
